General-purpose filter design for neural prosthetic devices
Brain-driven interfaces depend on estimation procedures to convert neural signals to inputs for prosthetic devices that can assist individuals with severe handicap scooters deficits. Previous estimation procedures were developed on an application-specific basis. Here we report a coherent estimation framework that unifies these procedures and motivates new applications of prosthetic devices driven by action potentials, local field potentials (LFPs), electrocorticography (ECoG), electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG), or optical methods. The brain-driven interface is described as a probabilistic relationship between neural activity and components of a prosthetic device that may take on discrete or continuous values. A new estimation procedure is developed for action potentials, and a corresponding procedure is described for field potentials and optical measurements. We test our framework against dominant approaches in an arm reaching task using simulated traces of ensemble spiking activity from primary motor cortex (MI) and a power wheelchairs navigation task using simulated traces of EEG-band power. Adaptive filtering is incorporated to demonstrate performance under neuron death and discovery. Finally, we characterize performance under model misspecification using physiologically realistic history dependence in MI spiking. These simulated results predict that the unified framework outperforms previous approaches under various conditions, in the control of position and velocity, based on trajectory and endpoint mean squared errors.

Peoria’s Wildlife Refuge
Plans for Wildlife Prairie Park located in the outskirts ofPeoria, began in the late 1960s when the Forest Park Foundation teamed up with the Chicago Zoological Society at Brookfield Zoo. They planned to use some Foundation land for endangered species’ breeding and refuge, but the plan was discarded because Brookfield Zoo switched its efforts to renovation. The project then changed into creating a park for native Illinois animals to live somewhat freely. The park would focus on the natural history of Illinois.
After extensive construction, Wildlife Prairie Park opened in the fall of 1978 for six weeks. During construction, many recycled materials were used, such as old whiskey barrels for trash receptacles. To prevent damaging natural foliage, many of the bridges and habitats were constructed entirely by hand.
The 2,000-acre park is home to animals native to Illinois during its pioneer days, such as wolves, bison, black bear, elk, and many others. The park also contains lakes, restored prairie, a train, and a Pioneer Farmstead, which shows life in the early 1800s with farm animals, a one-room school house, and log cabin. The Peoria area park serves three purposes: to conserve; to educate about conservation, wildlife, and other issues; and to provide a fun environment in which these goals may be accomplished.

Medicare’s role in the distribution of mobility-related assistive technology has not been well documented, yet rapid growth and regional variation in spending, and concerns over “in-the-home” coverage criteria, highlight the need for facts. Using the 2001 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey, we find that 6.2 percent percent of beneficiaries obtained mobility assistive technology under the Medicare durable medical equipment (DME) benefit. These beneficiaries were disproportionately poor, disabled, and users of both acute and postacute services. Average per item spending ranged from $52 for canes to $6,208 for power wheelchairs and www.easymedonline.com. Corn Stock Theatre, founded in 1954, has brought excitement and imagination to Peoria audiences for over fifty years.
